BACK IN THE DAY

OVINGDEAN RAVE

As acid house etched its mark on Britain in the late 80's and early 90's, Brighton clubs such as The Zap became synonymous in the South with the original warehouse sound. South Coast regulars included the likes of Danny Rampling, fresh from Shoom, Zap resident Carl Cox and an early, Hastings born, John Digweed as the then DJ JD.

Pre-club warm-ups at the Shark Bar BINGO BONGO (now the Arc bar) and Frock and Jacket (R.I.P.), the monthly Tonka Sound System with Harvey, Chocci and Rev, banging Fridays and the Saturday Coco Club all set the pace and drew the club crowds from London - although it was sunrises on the beach and the parties down at Black Rock, Shoreham and the Ovingdean Gap that really made it legendary.

Along the coast Hastings Pier hosted some of the heady Storm parties and westwards, near Worthing, In-Ter-Dance at Sterns became an institution in its own right, earning itself a place in history alongside the likes of the Eclipse in Coventry, Quadrant Park in Liverpool, Hacienda in Manchester, Shelly's in Stoke and the Astoria in London. It attracted people from as far afield as Scotland every weekend - as much for its after parties in the car park as its underground mayhem - and put Brighton and the South Coast clubs on the map with the best of them. Smiley days.
